Named after the Genoese navigator Lancelotto Malocello, way back in 1312, it was original known as Tyterogaka. It is thought that he voyaged in search of a previous expedition that mysteriously disappeared about 20 years beforehand.
He then stayed in Teguise, Lanzarote for a further two decades where records show he had built a fortress, so he was certainly a man who meant business!
Nowadays you don't have to be a sailor of the high seas to visit Lanzarote of course, but you can still find adventure to suit all tastes. Like Lancelotto however, after visiting even once, many people have their heart set on eventually staying for good.
